200 IM (2015) - for dueling jazz combos
Premiere: Senior Recital, University of Miami, Miami, FL, March 26th, 2015
Duration: ca. 28 min
Program Note:
200 IM retells the story of one of the classic swimming events I swam in high school—a 200 meter IM, or intermediate medley. The medley features all four of the strokes in succession—butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle. The work pits two jazz ensembles against each other, sometimes entwining and racing in a competitive sense and sometimes conveying the overall feeling of each stroke. This work captures the essence of the body movement in each stroke with special attention to the muscle motions, breathing, body position, and constant forward energy. I focus on rhythm and timbre as I see them related to the body motion of each stroke as well as the anticipation and exhilaration during the race.
